I've been tasked with a project based on a Brew 4 device.

Unfortunately, nearly all the documentation available here is for Brew MP. The 'Reference' section will let me browse the Brew 4 APIs, but there's no indication of how it all hangs together, and in particular there's very little information on how to actually create instances of the various classes. I'm also not very reassured by the fact that some of the Brew 4 API pages refer to Brew MP...

Can anyone give me any pointers to the old Brew 4 programming manuals? I assume they still exist somewhere, but haven't been able to find anything. And if anyone knows where I can find a decent set of sample code which is known to work on Brew 4 beyond what comes with the SDK, that would be great.

Hello,
We still have the Brew 4.x SDK, samples, documentation, etc. available here on the Brew MP website.  Just click on the SDK/Tools tab at top of page and scroll down to the lower left hand side.  There you will find links to Prior Brew Releases.  Another point I would like to make is that Brew MP is fully backwards compatible so that you will still be able to work with prior Brew applications while using our new Brew MP tools and utilities.  Please let me know if you are in need of any further assistance.
Regards,
Brian

D'oh! Thanks --- I had totally failed to notice that the SDK download actually contains the documentation.
And as for the Brew MP SDK --- to be honest, the Brew 4 SDK is so much smaller and simpler (only a 15MB download!) that I'd much rather use that than the new one; it fits in far more comfortably with my workflow.
