IMEDIA_SetRect() isn't absolutely necessary for pmd with audio only data. Though not calling IMEDIA_SetRect() should still play only the audio in the pmd(without displaying the image/animation if exists in pmd).

The volume level is mapped to a range understandable by the PC. So, probably 50 isn't good enough audible level on PC! I could still hear the sound but its very low at 50.

Did you try other values above 50 and still unable to hear anything?

By default the volume is set to AEE_MAX_VOLUME (100) so it should not be an issue if you don't set a volume.

At this point the BREW extension expects that when playing a buffer, you also specify the size of the buffer. I think this could be the solution to the issue which you are facing.
I agree that the BREW documentation does say that the buffer size isn't strictly necessarily (so is the case on the target), but the BREW extension requires a buffer size and pData->dwSize = 0 is assumed as no memory though the media object is created!
