Data connection profile on UMTS or GSM devices

1. For making a data call using a GSM/UMTS device, it is necessary that at least one Data Connection profiles or APN has been created on the device & selected for making data connections.

2. The Data Connection Profile settings depend on the wireless carrier whose RUIM is being used in the device. The same setting may or may not work across carriers.

3. Some wireless carriers (primarily if providing 3G SIMs) may embed these settings on the RUIM & may activate all necessary settings by default on powering on the device with the RUIM inserted.

4. If there is none created on the RUIM, a user may need to manually create a data profile.

5. There may be multiple data profiles created on the device.

6. From the device settings, it will mostly be possible to set a default data profile for different sets of Application using data services.

7. By default BrewMP Applications will use the Default data connection profile.

Look at below article for checking out on how to get the list & select a specific data profile using a Brew/BrewMP App:

Here is how to create a data profile on a device. In the example below the steps are specific to QRD 6270 & QRD 6240. But a similar way should be available on all GSM/UMTS devies.

For Data Connectivity to work you have to follow the same steps as you do on any other GSM device. 1. Create a new APN for the Operator whose RUIM you are using in the device. Get the APN settings from the Operator/Call center or Search on internet.

2. You need to create the new APN in Settings->Connection Settings->Connection data account->Add. Save this new Connection data account/APN.

3. Set it as the default data account from under Settings->Connection Settings->Default Connection.

4. Set all the Connections to Connect via the APN Name you created:

eg: Default Conn, Browser Conn, Java Conn, Email Conn, MMS Conn.

Vodafone APN settings:

___

Name = Vodafone

Home Page = http://live.vodafone.in/

APN = portalnmms

Connection Type: HTTP

Proxy = 10.10.1.100

Proxy Port = 9401

Is this the same for CDMA, and how do you actually make the data call.  Right now I have an IP address of 0.0.0.0.

for CDMA, data connection settings are generally set by default.
