Hello everyone,

I was able to connect using winsock but I'd like to test using bluetooth but I cant find any good example or source code around, I wonder if it is posible and if anyone has an example I can look at.

Thanks a lot in advance

Yes. You can use IBT*** api to do such thing.

Yes. You can use IBT*** api to do such thing.

The existance of the API doesn't mean that it is (or will) ship on any phone. The CDMA carriers have shown little interest in bluetooth enabled phones. Hopefully this will change.
If you want to do phone to phone communication for something like a game then currently your best bet is to use a server to mediate communications.

How can a Giant , responsible (?) company like Qualcomm do such mistakes ?
How can the introduce anything prematurely ?
I guess same thing happened with IXML also .
Coz I could find its API help in .chm help file.
Ruben :
Bare bluetooth is not of any help without exposed apis.
Anyway
Thanx Ruben & Mohlendo ;)

I haven't seen any BREW API for infra-red access in BREW, unless I overlooked something. There is access for Bluetooth and serial port.

Hi,
my intent is to build a Brew app that connects with a printer in order to print a receipt;
The printers we will conect to accept IR conections.
The cell phones we will use are Nokia cell phones.
Do you have any suggestions to do this?
Despite Brew does not have an API to IR access (doesn't it?), could there be a workaround?
Thanks in advance

How about using bluetooth? You may be able to use Bluetooth if your phone and printer supports it.

I don't think there's any commercial phone that support it, as it was said before by moderators here, the interface was released prematurely

There is currently no BREW API to allow access to the IR port.
There are also, unfortunately, no devices that support Bluetooth through BREW.
Sorry.

Hello,
We are developing an application that will use BlueTooth to driver a printer which only works with serial over BlueTooth. My question is if any knows wheter this will be possible using IBTSIOPORT. I have read that Verizon had Motorola turn off the serial capabilities of the BlueTooth stack. Anyone know anything about this?
Thanks,
Mike Klingen

Bluetooth is not currently supported through BREW (there were a set of APIs in BREW 2.1 that were never really adopted by OEMs), but there are plans to add this functionality.

Yes, BREW 3.x has a generic IPort interface which could be used to communicate over any port so long as it is supported by the device. At this point, however, I can not say what type of ports you should expect to be supported once 3.x devices begin appearing in the market.

Assuming the OEM has properly hooked up the USB and BT ports to the BREW IPort interface, you would use it in a more or less generic way. The current IPort interface essentially acts like a dumb pipe, so you do not get low-level access to the features of the USB and BT ports. You just get to read and write bytes to the port.

1. What's difference between IBTSIOPORT Interface in brew 2.0 and IPort Interface in brew 3.0?
2. Can i develop a serical IO application with IBTSIOPORT Interface in brew 2.0?
3. There is "The IBTSIOPORT Interface functions are used to open, close, read, and write using a serial interface over Bluetooth" in brew API reference, what does "over Bluetooth" mean?

I'm not exact sure, but I think "over bluetooth" means that the connection will passtrough a bluetooth wireless connection ( not a serial cable ).

The 2.x Bluetooth APIs were never really supported on devices, so it's very unlikely that you'll be able to get an application using these APIs to work.

I know of no handsets in which IBlueTooth is enabled.
If you are working with the manufacturer then
you could code your own as an extension.
Bluetooth Protocol stack is designed with a
callback architecture so it should map to BREW fine.
And, of course, if it is on the handset chances are you
can access it if you really need to . However, you may wish
to check with the carrier first.

As everyone of us knows there is no BREW handset currently available that supports Bluetooth. But can i get it to work on emulator at least.
We have a lan system implemented with us. So what are the system settings I ll have to make to get this to work??
Any help??
Has anyone done it on emulator??

I think like emulating the camera, bluetooth support is not available. On a side not the API will probably change completely when brew eventually has devices for it.

How to use the IPort interface to work with the IR an Bluetooth interfaces? Is the protocol (exchange of messages) in charge of the programmer?
Does anybody know if there is a better material dealing with this matter?

It looks like Verizon finally has a phone that allows Bluetooth Serial I/O - LG VX8100. See their functionality chart: http://dts.vzw.com/pdf/BT_Chart_Handsets.pdf
Unfortunately, the VX8100 only has Brew 2.1, so I can't use IPort from Brew 3.x.
Does anyone know if I can use IBTSIOPORT from 2.1?
Thanks,
Mike

As far as I know the IBTSIOPort interface was never implemented by any device and it was deprecated. You probably won't be able to accomplish anything with it.

Is it possible to create custom input devices for handsets that could provide input to brew based apps? If so, where can I learn more about this?
Specifically, I wish to create an input device for an app that I'm working on that would consist of 2 buttons that could be held a few feet from the handset, either connected via wire or bluetooth (I'd prefer bluetooth, but not sure how much more difficult that would be)

is it possible to make a serial connection over BT?
If (it's possible)
What must be done to implement it?
Else
When will it be available in Brew to do so?

I've read all the previous thread and the comment that bluetooth will be added in the future. However, it is a little unclear if the IPORT interface does or does not work with 3.X Brew today.
What I want to do is communicate with a bluetooth device that has a Serial Port Profile SPP. Is this possible?
If so, what is the Port name to use with IPORT.
Last question: is it possible to pair with a device supporting the serial port profile.

I was told by Qualcomm that no handsets were ever shipped where the OEM implemented the BlueTooth API. Basically, Qualcomm produced the API, but no one ever used it on a shipped product.
I have had it in my mind to actually test a few handsets, especially those known to be friendly to the occasional 'hack', but I haven't had the time yet.
Let us know if you have any luck as I have an application that I was looking to do as well that would be nice with BT.

Yes, I read those comments too, but they seemed to be applying to the 2.X IBTS APIs. There were subsequent comments about using IPORT, but nothing very clear.

I think what the IPort comments were saying that the IPort interface is generic and it's theoretically possible that the OEM could allow for a BlueTooth connection to be established to IPort. In actuality we're not aware of any devices that have implemented this (I'd be very surprised if anyone has).
The best assumption to use in developing BREW apps is that BREW through 3.x does not support BlueTooth.

More than four years have passed when everyone was expecting Bluetooth support in BREW, still the same scenario and no further chances of improvement, now-a-days even mp3 players are bluetooth enabled but still BREW is years behind.
Qualcomm should really think again in this respect.

I have several devices of au(japan KDDI) with bluetooth.
Does anyone know how to test bluetooth on Brew simulator?
Thanks

Hi, I'm new to the forum, and looking to find out what is the state of bluetooth support for Verizon and other US phones. The last definitive thing I found about support of bluetooth was in June 2004 which said it was coming soon. Since most of these phones now support bluetooth, has this changed? We are trying simply to pair a sensor device to it and send short bursts of data to the handset for forwarding thru the cell network via GPRS.
Thanks for any current information or suggestions.

The short answer is, no. There are no phones deployed in the US that support BREW Bluetooth API calls. This should change when phones with BREW 4 are released as support has ben reintroduced.
Qualcomm was actually ahead of the game, originally including an API set for Bluetooth in BREW 2 devices. However, as with all APIs, it is up to the handset manufacturer to implement them. This was before BT gained prominence and so none of the manufacturers did.
As a result, the BT API was dropped from BREW 3. Unfortunately, this was right around the time when BT gained popularity, especially for earpieces. This led to what you see now, handsets with BT, but no BREW API hooks to access it inside an application.
If you are looking to do proof of concept, you can potentially find some work arounds, or acquire a BREW 4 device from Japan and give it a try.
Best of luck.

The state of BT support will change around the SDK 3.1.5 SP01 timeframe (next month).

Thanks Max and ZeroCool. Are there any release notes for the upcoming SDK 3.1.5 SP01 or do you know the expected date for the release? We have the app running on most other phone systems, but are anxious to get it running on Brew.
On GSM phones we are using AT commands instead and sending our data through SMS. I saw there are some AT commands and that we could manually perhaps set up a SPP on Bluetooth but haven't found anything that shows the way to get from there to causing the phone to pass along data via SMS using AT commands to control it?
Any thoughts on either direction would be helpful. Its generally a pretty simple task we are asking it to do right now.
Thanks very much.

I believe it's scheduled for release before the end of the year. Support will be available for the following profiles:
Generic Access Profile (GAP), Serial Port Profile (SPP), Headset Profile (HSP), Handsfree Profile (HFP), Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP), and Generic Object Exchange Profile (GOEP).

Hi Max, at the beginning of December you said that SDK 3.1.5 SP01 should be released soon (hopefully before the of the year 2007). I haven't seen anything yet. Do you have an update on its availability. We are anxiously awaiting the release for project that needs it badly and as soon as possible. Is there possibly a beta version you'd like us to trial if the release is still not immediate? thanks very much. Larry

heyy,
I tried creating a Bluetooth SPP Server and Client using the BREW SDK 3.1.5 SP01 .There seem to be some problems :
error C2065: 'AEECLSID_BTSIOPORT' : undeclared identifier
error C2065: 'AEECLSID_BT_NOTIFIER' : undeclared identifier
error C2065: 'NMASK_BT' : undeclared identifier
AEECLSID_BTSIOPORT - this error can be removed by messing with the AEEClassIds.h but i wonder why is this commented out ?
This should be enabled to create a instance of IBT using ISHELL_CreateInstance()
( same problem with AEECLSID_BTSDP and AEECLSID_BTAG )
AEECLSID_BT_NOTIFIER and NMASK_BT - well i cant find these anywhere in the delivered system . They are used to subscribe to BTEvents using ISHELL_RegisterNotify(). Probably some header file is missing/or not updated (The IBT Notifier interface) .
The client side seems to be ok .. except that some very imp api's (reading and writing to a SPP port) aren't supported . Atleast the documentation says so.
Well if these errors are not faced by you gals/guys tell me please where i got jacked.
:D
thanks

Hey Ren0:
You need to include AEEBT_BID.bid for AEECLSID_BT_NOTIFIER and NMASK_BT.
If someone here gets Bluetooth working on a device, particularly Bluetooth SPP, I'd love to know what device you're using. Seems like current Verizon devices don't support BT SPP in BREW.

Hey Ren0. I know, this is kind of a trite explanation, so I thought I'd soften it with this preceding paragraph to let you know that I'm not the BOFH. That said:
grep NMASK_BT $BREWDIR/inc/*
That command works well if, in Cygwin, you use the tab key to expand out the $BREWDIR environment variable to something that grep.exe can understand.
;-)

So, now that a few months have gone by, are there any devices that have confirmed support for the BT SPP using SP01? Based on BREW versions, I was expecting the LG AX260 and LG AX565 to support this, but BTIL is crashing.
Both phones utilize 3.1.5.36....

BREW handsets using the QC BT solution has been out there for quite a while, starting from the Motorola V710. The CDMA Razr also uses our BT stack.
In 3.1.5.145, IBT interface is provided for bluetooth support. But there aren’t many operators that require the bt extension to be exposed. So I don’t expect many handsets with the bt extension enabled or advertized.
