After buying an HTC Freestyle, based on "Brew MP 1.0.2 devices all have a debug mode", I and looking for a Brew MP phone that "actually" does support developer mode. (I guess this is a good case of the exception proving the rule). What are some models known to have a developer mode?

Or is there's a way to get the developer version of the firmware without needing to become an authenicated developer?

Note that all Brew MP 1.0.2 devices should have developer mode supported. You can get the list of devices following devices tab on this website and filter them out specifying BrewMP version 1.0.2.

Maybe I need some clarification... Is it possible to develop on a phone without an authenicated developer account? From what I've read, it sounds like I should be able to at least cable load applications on to the phone.

So far:
HTC Freestyle: Can't enable gateway. The AT&T site says there is developer firmware available, but from what I've read it's limited to authenicated devleopers.

LG Revere: Can enable gateway, can cable load an app. Get Unknown error (10) on attempting to launch c_basicapp and c_basicmod1 app, installed using loader from mif file in Platforms\1.0.2.xxx\samplecode

LG Cosmos 2 and Extravert: Can enable gateway, can cable load an app. App does not show up in the list when restarting the phone and going into either Apps or Media Center.

None of the phone have a developer mode setting and none have the dev mode menu.

I've also read that the phones can be sent in to have the test bits set. Would that help in my case? And, is this a reasonably priced option?

Issue seems to be with phones not having certified builds.
Note that all brew phone above Brew 3.x and Brew MP phones are test bit enabled but if you are using commercial phone(I think you purchased) then generally OEM's ships commercial handsets by locking the EFS.

Also looks like in your case, your phone's doesn't have Qualcomm certified s/s builds. Once your phone have proper build then you would be able to use developer mode and load the application by cable loading.

Coming to your next problem that "application doesn't show up in apps/media center" this will be solved once you have Qualcomm certified build.

In order to get the latest certified build on your phone, you need to be an authenticated developer.

Once you get authentication, then you can raise request on support portal in order to flash your device with latest s/w build.

BrewMP versions are generally fixed for devices.
They may not be updated.
