I think i'm going to go down to the states and pick my self up a brew enabled phone. Which is a good one to get in your guys' experience?

Also do i have to Enable my phone for testing or can i just test my brew applications with AppLoader and any brew phone?

You have to get your phone test enabled by QUALCOMM before using the AppLoader, which of course involves shipping it down to San Diego and 3-7 days' wait.
Despite it's flaws I'm fond of the T720. Some bonuses:
+1: They're widely available, less expensive than some of the latest phones, and it's easy to get data cables for them.
+2: They draw faster than any other phone I've got experience with (including the LG VX6000, which was a surprise).
And some drawbacks:
-1. Hitting DOWN and RIGHT simultaneously registers as AVK_CLEAR, which is a firmware/hardware bug.
-2. The keypad controller can only recognize one key at a time.
This has obvious drawbacks for gaming.
-3. The T720 uses MMF sound files instead of QCP. This isn't really a drawback, it's just a non-standardism.

The LGVX4400 is the fastest phone.
The T720 isn't bad though.
Why don't you just buy them on ebay? That's what I do. Will they not ship to Canada?

They even ship to uk, so shouldnt be a problem.. Getting a new phone (+test enabled) takes usually 12 days for me.
Btw, tell me if i m wrong, but the lg4400, t720 and a530 represent the biggest market..

I second that. I bought all my handsets on eBay. There are bunch of crooks out there so be careful, but other than that, it is a good way to get handsets way below market price.
As for the models, I agree that t720, vx4400 and a530 are probably the best choices for a starter-phone. I feel that the t720 and vx4400 have lost some of their luster in the last 6 months or so and are beginning to feel outdated, so my personal choice would be the a530. Also, the display in the a530 is probably the best of all three handsets. Nonetheless, a vx4400 and t720 should be part of every Brew developer's repertoire.

thanks for the input guys. What this stuff about getting phones testing enabled? Can someone elaborate for me please.
anyone got any phones they want to unload on me?

In order to put your own applications on the handset and in order to run these applications on the handset the hadnset needs to be "test-enabled."
It is a process that is reserved for developers only and is not available to the public for obvious security reasons - mainly to prevent home-developed applications to be run on the phones.
In order to get a handset test-enabled you have to send it to Qualcomm. They are the only ones who can do this, as it is a proprietary step. It is free of charge, though.
Hope this helps.

reading that post i was like "omg how much is this going to cost now"
nice to hear it's free...how long does it take roughly?

Typically the handset is returned to you per overnight FedEx the same day Qualcomm received it. It seems to be a very streamlined process, and it is very impressive how quickly they keep turning the handsets around.
Here is the Qualcomm webpage that outlines everything and also includes the shipping address, etc.

looks like we are getting an LG VX-6000 to test on from our Carrier down in the states.
Although i've notice a problem with the LGE-VX6000 emulator i've downloaded from qualcomm. For some reason (and this doesn't happen with any other emulators) the vx6000 won't let me do something with my files....im debugging it right now. anyone else noticed wierd things with the LG-6000 emulator?

No, not at all. It works perfectly fine for me.

must be a user error :P

have you tried writing to a file in the current directory. That seems to be the problem for me. All my IFILE_Write()'s return 0 for some strange reason... This doesn't happen is any other emulator i've tried. Any ideas?

a quick grep turns up:
C:\Program Files\BREW SDK v2.1.0\Devices\verizon>grep FS_ *qsc
CDM8600.qsc:FS_LIMITS_PER_MODULE 65535 4294967295
KX414.qsc:FS_LIMITS_PER_MODULE 65535 1512000

VX4400v2.0.qsc:FS_LIMITS_PER_MODULE 300 1500000
LGE_VX-6000 has a really low FS_LIMITS_PER_MODULE. But i dont know what that is. FileSize Limit per module i assume. 50$ this is my problem. Can anyone tell me what this FS_LIMITS_PER_MODULE actually is. No mention about it in the Device Configurator Guide.pdf

Yes that is file per module (max number of files your module is allowed to create). When you open your phone emulator qsc in device configurator, click on details button, go to file system tab, you will find the info.

It's odd, my program works with the VX4400 which allows 300 Files, while it doesn't work with the VX6000 which allows 500. Nor do i even come close to opening this many files at once.

Are you seeing this problem in emulator or device?

I had a problem a while back with the VX6000 emulator. Similar, but it "went away"; my memory is hazy on the details.
I *think* what happened was I was unable to create a new file, but if a file already existed I could write as much as I wanted to it. Since, thus far, my apps all only need one file (options and high scores), I worked around it by creating a stub (with a different device emulated), then copied it over for runs on the VX6000.
Also, I think the bug was particular to either the BREW SDK v2.0.1 or v2.1.0 emulator, but not both.
At the moment I'm not in a position to double check this, so please take this one with a grain of salt.

Why don't you just buy them on ebay? Pardon my ignorance, but is it possible to get Verizon to activate a phone that you haven't purchased through them (or a Verizon authorized dealer)?
Thanks,
Paul
